Happy New Year
So, that’s it, all over for another year. The turkey has finally been eaten, along with the piles of Heroes, mince pies and the Christmas cake that you just had to buy even though its only you that eats it! Happy New Year! There is no better time of the year to sit down and map out your year ahead. It’s not something you have to live by, more like guidelines really, but it’s good to have a plan. That plan needs to start with sorting out the clutter.
Clear the Clutter
Now that the decorations have come down, you look around your living space and enjoy the simple quietness of a clutter free environment. It’s nice, huh? But how can you keep it that way? The answer is to declutter and a perfect way to do this is with a self-storage unit. Self-storage is a rapidly growing industry, the Self-Storage Association estimate that there are over 1500 storage facilities around the UK with an industry turnover of around 750 million in 2017.
Many people take on a storage unit to supplement their small living space believing it to be a necessity, rather than a luxury. A third of customers have had their unit for over three years and use their unit as an extension to their homes. What you keep in your unit is entirely up to you, within reason. We wouldn’t be happy if you went all ‘Breaking Bad’ on us ( https://bit.ly/1NdLvlG ) and we do have a compact list of items that we ask you not to store, purely for the safety and consideration of others. Other than that it’s up to you what you do with the space.
Not only is it a good exercise for your home, it’s a great opportunity to declutter your mind too. There is a positive psychological impact that comes from having ones ducks in a row. You can read more about that here https://bit.ly/2rks6KB It’s a fascinating article by Time for You which goes into depth about how cleanliness and minimalisation can alter your state of mind. As with everything, the simple approach is often the clearest. Consequently if you have less to clean, you’re more likely to do it. Sentiment often plays a part with our unwillingness to part with certain items. Carefully pack away those china ornaments that belonged to your Grandmother and store them safely without any guilt. That way you can open them up, remind yourself of wonderful memories and then put them away again. Keeping the sentiment, but freeing yourself from the clutter.
Don’t make resolutions too big. Keep them small and manageable. If you start the year by telling yourself that you’re going to completely free your entire home from clutter, then you’re already overwhelming yourself. Start small by telling yourself that you’ll have the main living space clutter free by Easter. Manageable goals are achievable therefore more likely to encourage you to continue.
